Preface

Print has a long history in China. In ancient times print is the carrier of culture. In modern times it is used as the most important tool for propaganda and it is localized for the impact of specific social and artistic context. Up until the contemporary era, the types of prints have become more various and the techniques and ideological orientation has become more diversified. In recent years, prints again raise people’s great concern, with academic exchange and folk collection getting more active. Therefore, at the right moment it is farsighted and decisive to hold the China Guangzhou International Exlibris and Mini-prints Biennial.

It is well known that exlibris is art with unique form. It is a branch of prints but it is small in size, delicate in design, diversified in content. Nowadays the pursuit of big scale and strong visual impact is getting more popular in the art circles. However design of exlibris emphasizes the delicateness and elegance, which is relatively rare. Exlibris designers have to focus on the small size, expressing the theme and techniques more intensively and more specifically. Through this, a readable and appreciable artistic style is revealed from the works, inspiring both the artists and the readers.

Besides, exlibris bear great relationship with books, which contributes to its content and cultural denotation. It is without doubt that exlibris is a window to show us the colorful world about books. Its specific form also throws light on the culture of different times, regions and fields.

Owning to its relationship with books, exlibris is related with many art majors like print, illustration and book binding. What’s more, it is also related with reading on natural and social science. With the background that interdisciplinary research and construction is an important task for many Academy of Fine Arts nowadays, holding exlibris exhibition and exchange activities will better promote the disciplinary development of Academy of Fine art.

The exhibition about exlibris and mini-prints is increasingly well developed all over the world. Basing on the efforts of all walks of life, the China Guangzhou Biennial of Exlibris and Mini-prints is another activity aims to build up a high-level international brand. It was held for the first time in Guangzhou in 2010. After that the committee continues their effort to learn from the previous experience and try to hold a better exhibition this year. Observed from the perspective of organization and selection, this year’s Guangzhou Biennial is more internationalized, with more countries and artists getting involved and more diversified works getting participate in it. We strongly believe that it will be more and more successful and reputational.

This year’s Guangzhou Biennial will be held in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. As one of the host organizations, we are very concerned with the cooperation with the Chinese Artists Association Exlibris Research. Here I also want to express my gratitude towards Guancheng Art Museum, Guanlan Print Base, print organizations, the major Academy of Fine Arts in China and many foreign experts for the support for this exhibition. We will work harder in the organization of this exhibition. We are sure that this great academic event will attract more international artists, research institutes and collectors to pay attention to contemporary Chinese print and exlibris, teaching in Chinese Academy of Fine Arts and academic brand, which will further lead to the exchange and sustainable exploration in academic resources.
